Word first Face Transplant!

Posted on November 29th, 2006 in General by daya

A year after a Frenchwoman received the world’s first partial face transplant, doctors say the operation was a success and she is gaining more and more sensitivity and facial mobility.

As British and American doctors work on plans for a first full-face transplant, the medical team at the hospital in Amiens in northern France issued a new photo and a statement Monday, exactly a year after they transplanted the lips, nose and chin of a brain-dead woman onto Isabelle Dinoire.

In the new photo, Dinoire is almost smiling, and appears to have better control over her face than she did at a news conference in February, her only formal public appearance since the operation.

Dinoire’s immune system nearly rejected the transplant twice, the doctors’ statement said, but she was given immuno-depressants that helped overcome the threat.

The Best web mapping services

Posted on November 29th, 2006 in General by daya

Since Google and Yahoo launched their open-API maps, customizable mapping applications have spread like wildfire. So much so, in fact, that we had to give sites and mash ups specializing in the use of these (and other) map interfaces their own category. The best mapping service is Wayfaring, an application for creating and sharing personal maps. Follow Wayfaring’s simple directions to build a map with a number of features, including routes, directions, waypoints, notes, and tags. Combine these to make maps of trails, recommended restaurants, daily activities, directions to an event, and other endless possibilities. Wayfaring scores big for not only being sharable and searchable, but for also allowing collaboration on the building of new maps. If you prefer, put yourself on the map with Frappr, our second place winner. Frappr, which stands for Friend Mapper, is a social map application with good functionality for creating and maintaining themed groups over large areas. HousingMaps, in third place, is a popular application for locating Craigslist postings for apartments, rooms, and sublets on a Google map. It’s useful, simple, and fast. More content and filters would add to its value, but HousingMaps still does well for what it intends.
