Quintura’s search engine for kids

Quintura for KidsYakov Sadchikov, co-founder and CEO of Quintura, got in touch to tell me about his company’s new search engine for kids called (duh) Quintura for Kids. There are other kid-friendly search engines out there (summed up in 2005 by Danny Sullivan on Search Engine Watch), but what I especially like about Quintura is the clickable tag cloud that appears as a supplement to the search term.

For example, I searched for “elephant,” and in addition to a list of relevant links, this lovely cloud appeared, presenting me with a trail of related terms I could follow to find out more. This design at the same time both narrows and broadens the search, allowing for both specific research and general exploration.

The interface is clean and friendly, with the simplicity of Google’s single text box (even though the search itself rests on top of Yahoo! Kids) on an engaging graphical backdrop. Seems like a nice way to introduce kids to online research.

Anything to add on the topic of search engines for kids?

Gardening with kids: getting started

Posted on February 16th, 2007 in General by daya

The crocuses are just starting to peek out of the soil, and suddenly my kids are dying to get their hands in the dirt. The timing couldn’t be better for the great post at Z Recommends about how to cultivate little gardeners.

Playing in the snow…in the bathtub

Posted on February 16th, 2007 in General by daya

Snow play! Without all the bundling! From Colleen:

There is something to be said for playing in the snow. From the mouth of my mom, “Kids need fresh air every day”. But thinking about dressing the kids to go play in the snow sends shivers up my spine.

What really irks me is that it takes longer to bundle my munchkins up for their outside experience than it does for them to get cold and want to come right back in.

So today, instead of dealing with the whole fiasco,  I decided to shovel some snow into a big Rubbermaid container, put the kids in their boots and mittens and head to the bathtub. Dumping the snow in the bathtub, I gave them each a cup and a spoon for digging, threw them in and presto – a winter wonderland.

And, as an added bonus, it killed almost an hour of the never ending, stuck in the house, going crazy with two rambunctious kids day! You can’t beat that!

This also works well with children who are sick or unable to go outside but don’t want to miss playing in the snow.

Check out the adorable picture on Colleen’s blog.
