Apollo the next web revolution ?

Posted on April 22nd, 2007 in General by daya

The new web to desktop application support – Apollo Runtime

Apollo, Adobe labs released earlier this month an alpha version of Apollo runtime available for general use, free to download by anyone interested in developing desktop apps and widgets using their technology.

Apollo is meant to be a new cross OS that will allow programmers to develop and distribute enhanced rich Internet applications compiled for desktop use, using and combining their previous knowledge in all other web development areas previously released such as Ajax, Flash/Flex, Java, XHTML. For users, Apollo technologies will provide according to Adobe labs enhanced access to the Internet from a standalone desktop application that does not need the support of a shell program to run.

Once appeared in the world of flash developing for the web, the Apollo technology started making waves and many jumped right in to try and develop with its help. But there still are many people out there that don’t yet realize Apollo from Adobe is quite different from the environments they are used working with. It’s not a Swf to Exe application as many still believe, Apollo is more like the flash player we all use, it requires the installation of Apollo runtime for Apollo applications to be accessible from the respective computer. Once you’ve downloaded and installed your runtime, you can do whatever you want with your RIAs developed with Apollo even when you are offline. Adobe labs try to demonstrate the use of this improved interactivity with their e-bay application that allows the user (while no internet connection is available) access via the Apollo e-bay widget , publish its products, pictures, lists and prices via the runtime and then post them all directly on e-bay once the internet connection in online.

When compared to more known cross OS`s used before in creating widgets, such as Zinc, Apollo fails the standalone tests, as it does require that runtime to be accessible from one’s PC and also it’s applications are not exe files, they are .air files that need to be installed with the help of the runtime. But there is no point in arguing the fact that Apollo is quite promising and it does seem a bit more interactive than anything used before in this field. Now, when it comes to offline web applications, we can’t forget about Microsoft that seems to still remain the main competitor with Apollo, although it seems like Firefox might include in the future support for offline web apps, according to Mozilla representatives.

To give a head start to both developers and potential users, Adobe developed a few desktop applications using Apollo technologies. They are all available for download on their website. As Apollo is a new thing for most people, here is a quick guide into downloading and using any Apollo based widget:

- download Apollo runtime and install it on your PC

-

-

There are already many fun and interesting widgets to be downloaded all over the web, based on Apollo runtime technologies. You can find youtube applications, apps that will help you turn your blog into a widget and many more useful stuff. It already seems like Apollo will be a great hit, and it’s only been a couple of weeks, who know just how deep into Apollo runtime applications we’ll be a year from now?

  8. It’s the first time when you can go out and buy a bathing suite that is not made to cover-up your defects, but to show off you growing belly.

  11. You are now free to imagine all possibilities and you actually have the time to it.
  12. You get more space for yourself! And you don’t even feel bad to claim it.

Patience is learnt OVER time

Posted on April 16th, 2007 in General by daya

Being a parent is most definitely one of the most important patience tests. They say patience is a virtue, it is true – but this comment makes you think patience is a quality that only a few chosen ones have. In fact, patience is learnt over time even if some parents don’t do well on this chapter at first. But, with a little effort, any parent can learn to be patient and to amuse himself over some situations that not so long ago annoyed him.

Firstly, you have to learn to have patience with yourself. Do not blame yourself for everything and show tolerance – without falling into the trap of self-content. Happily for children, adults are mature persons that know, most of the times, to keep their nerves and emotions under control. Don’t raise your voice. Instead, impose your wills with a calm but firm tone, no matter the problem.

Generally, try not to think about tomorrow and don’t let yourself become overwhelmed with perspective problems. Focus only on immediate problems, because if you do otherwise you will only worry a lot more and you will get upset easier.

A lower stress level will definitely inflict more patience on your side. Also, try to explain to the child, calmly, just what it is you are expecting of him and the ways he can rise up to your expectations. Restrain from blaming him. And if we already are on the subject of expectations, it is essential not to ask of him more than he can give you, based on his age.

Children sometimes seem to try on purpose testing the limits of their parents’ patience. If you fell this is what your little one does, ask yourself what might push him towards this. Maybe he is trying to cover some frustration, maybe he wants revenge for a moment when you were unfair or maybe he feels neglected and he’s only trying to get your attention.

Maybe it would be best if you looked at the problem from his point of view for a change: if he won’t learn to be himself a patient person, then he probably won’t try to help you anyhow on this.

To make your child become a patient person you can:

- Play with him interactive games – this will teach him to wait until his turn comes.

- Read to him thick books and long stories, leaving the follow-up for the next evening. Do not give into his pleads, trying to make you tell him the ending in the same evening.

- Teach him to plant a tree or to take care of a flower – then he will learn to be patient until he sees the results of his work.

- If he wants a bike, give him money, a little bit over a period of time, and tell him to save them for that bike. Of course you will be the one that will give him the present, but your child will learn to have patience and, at the same time, to treasure the value of money.

Tips for a Polite e-mail

Posted on April 15th, 2007 in General by daya

Try to be as brief as possible

As they say, less definitely means more. If you want to answer an email you just received, you don’t always need to include the original message too. The one that sent you the original e-mail most definitely has a copy or at least know what he or she has written, and if you are preparing to say a couple of words like “so do I”, it surely doesn’t make any sense.

Keep in mind that there are companies that pay for their Internet connection by the minute, so they won’t be happy with reading long e-mails. Anyway, studies done by e-mail experts point out the fact that any e-mail that ends up having more than 100 text lines seems boring to the human eye and will finally end up not read properly.

Attach only if you need to

Don’t use attachments just for the fun of it. Yeah, sure, they are a useful discovery, but you shouldn’t use it unless it’s absolutely needed. Never include your text message in the attachment if it’s too short, there is no need to attach anything then. Imagine your friends getting an empty e-mail from you, having to download the attachment, to open it using another program, and finally to read one line of text telling him that you changed your mind and can’t come to dinner at a certain restaurant tonight.

Never send an attachment without properly explaining in the message what it is. Some mail attachment have strange extensions and they might contain viruses, so the recipient needs to know before that the file he’s going to open is absolutely safe.

Be wary when you send mail to more than one recipients

When sending to multiple recipients, many people actually end up sending spam e-mails without even realizing it. I’m sure you can’t wait to tell everyone how wonderful you vacation was, but before you click that “Send” button, look again over your list of recipients and make sure they all really want to hear about it. There is no point in getting someone annoyed just because you got over-excited.

If you plan to send a mass e-mail to everyone in your address book, try looking over it first. You can never what person’s email you still have there and you can’t remember. This way you will avoid unpleasant situations, like criticizing your ex-boyfriend and sending him the e-mail also.

Write carefully, watch your style!

Maybe you are a nice person and like to write in a familiar style, but not everyone is ready to take up your approach. Short sentences come with a familiar tone, so use them only when writing to people you know. Also, the emoticons are meant to be used only when you are sure they will not seem too impolite given the condition of your relationship. At the end, always double check everything you have written. Spelling and grammar mistakes might be overlooked by friends, but even if they don’t mind, it doesn’t mean they like such an e-mail. A properly written e-mail will be more effective in any circumstances.

Problems that come with formatting

E-mail messages have been invented to help us communicate easier with each other. So if you have something to say, just say it in plain text, you don’t have to add fancy formats and graphics, you are not entering a design contest, you are simply writing an e-mail. Keep in mind that the formatting you use might not be compatible with the one accepted by the recipients e-mail program or computer, and this way you’ll end up with a sent message that simply couldn’t be read.

It’s important how you start and how you finish

Many people these days start their email directly, without saying anything. It’s very important to know how to start, so don’t write any e-mails without at least placing on the first line a plain “Hi there”. You don’t have to say much as an introduction, just add a “Dear Friend” or “Hi Honey” at the beginning and you should be ok. Finishing is also important. It shows you still respect that particular person after transmitting everything you had to say. If it’s a friendly e-mail maybe “With sincerity” seems a little off, but a line like “With love” or “Best regards” it’s very appropriate. You should sign your name after a finishing sentence.
