Web hosting Nightmare. The Hunt for best shared hosting Company.

Posted on March 10th, 2007 in General by daya

The World Wide Web is a massive collection of web sites; all hosted on computers called “Web Servers”, all over the world. The web server where your web site's html files, graphics, etc. reside is known as the “Web Host”. Web hosting clients simply upload their web sites to a shared (or dedicated) web server, which the ISP (Internet Service Provider) maintains to ensure a constant, fast connection to the Internet.

Reliable hosting? A Web Hosting company provides you the space on their web server which allows you anyone on the Internet to view your web site. Web Hosts charge on a monthly basis and provide differing levels of service.

Web hosting can be a nightmare if you do not do your homework. After devoting time, effort and money building your website, it has to be put on a server, which is accessible by the visitors on the internet. That is where web hosting comes in. If you have never hosted your own website before, this section will give you some basic knowledge about web hosting. In this chapter, there are articles on how the world wide web (internet) works, what you need to know about web hosting, terminology, how to select web hosts etc. A web server is a powerful computer, which can accommodate thousands of requests for your website pages. A web server has to be connected to the internet all day and night so that users can access it anytime. A web hosting provider is a company that sells space on these web servers to website owners like you. They provide a full-time, high-bandwidth connection to the internet, so that visitors can access your site easily.

Now-a-days web hosting is very cheap due to intense competition in the web hosting industry. There are free web hosting companies also, however, they are not recommended for professional or company websites. The free web hosts will recover their costs by showing ads on your website, and provides less flexibility in terms of having your own domain names and email addresses.

Here is a sneak peek into my personal experience with Web hosting companies and the deal packages they have to offer. I have spent several years of my life hosting a server of my own from my home. However, one day I decided to move to a shared hosting facility. The first company I chose for the shared hosting after a lot of digging was Indiatimes. They mention numerous reasons for anyone to choose them, like,

·         Reliability of Indiatimes – you are assured of a trustworthy service provider.Fast hosting

·         Intuitive and proven control panel – Plesk.

·         Best value for money – packages have been designed with the customer in mind.

·         Professional and customer focused support.

·         Most comprehensive and scalable hosting service.

All this is bull shit. I can guarantee that they are one of the worlds worst companies to host web services. First, their services are very, very expensive. They offer no value for your money. Their support system is an utter non-sense. If you contact them by email, you never get a reply to your email. If you loose your mind and give them a call, you will be told that they never received your email. Moreover, their customer service over phone works only during office hours and representatives who work there are immature college kids, who do not have the knowledge to answer any of your basic questions, forget about any technical questions. They do not even know what’s what. They can make your life miserable. Their staff change everyday, so every time you call them, there’s a new person on the phone and you will need to explain every thing to him. To top all this, there is always some or the other problem always. The host is that, they will start spaming you with some automatic email every day, even 6 month before you service expires.  Even after repeatly telling them, they will continue to send the warning mail that, your service going to expire.

Frustrated, I changed my hosting company. This time I chose Nettigritty.com. This was different experience. Their charges are way away from affordable. They are very expensive when their competitors are considered. They charge approximately 10USD for 10 MB per month. The reseller plan I took is 500MB for us$14. But, I must admit, their service was excellent. You’ll never have to call the customer care for any problems. Their response time for the email is almost negligible. I never ever called the customer care in one full year. The problem with them was that their control panel is even then highly user friendly do not offer support of chanign mx record, Cname which is really need of the day today. But, I never ones felt, just mail a with fraction of section you get a reply saying it is done. Though I was happy with them, I needed a more economical and affordable web host. So, I moved again.

            Best Hosting

This time it was media temple. And I chose the grid server. Another example of a company that only spoke and did not act. The customer service was really, really bad. Moreover the control panel is very confusing and hard to use. Every time you use the services, you are use to end up in some or the other problem. Sometimes the server is down; sometimes the control panel is bad, and so on. To add up, the customer service is sick. They even have hidden charges. If you transfer your domain, they charge you over 15USD. They literally pull your nerves out.

My trial and error hosting experience continued with my New hosting plan at 1&1. The customer service was nothing to talk about, delayed response.  The control panel is very friendly, and I need to use the customer service quite often though. Slow performance of their service, the time take to change the domain some time even more than 72hrs, etc made me quite 1&1.com. Recently they have some excellent offer, for example their basic linux plan us$3 per month, but great offer of us$100 for of vouchers, etc.  I still continue to host couple of my sites here.

Again, I moved, and now to godaddy.com.  Another stupid choice I made and ended up in an annoying service. Their control panel again is very stupid and confusing. They are bid economical, no doubt. But, they are very irritating. You go there to buy a domain name and they try to sell you services worth 1000USD. Their customer support also is not anything great. Moreover, the support over phone is always unpleasant. Their control panel sort filthy Indian fish market. Instead of smooth control panel, you will end up in seeing more of the additional service they wanted to sell you. Most of the service, with some due-deligence in google, you might get it free, but they would try their luck to sell it to you, at higher cost, some big fancy name tag attached to it.

Better hosting solution  Finally, it looks like my hunt for web hosting company has come to an end.  I have found a wonderful company that satisfies all my needs. Its dream host. They are economical. Their service is excellent. They are on top of all the web hosting reviews. They command the web hosting scenario. They have some promotional offers going on all the time. With that you can get unlimited domain, unlimited space, and everything else that you need to host a web site, at an amazing 20USD. Believe it or not! I have not tried using phone support, but the support through mail is excellent, thought not as fast as nettigritty.com.  Their server is always up and never down. They are absolutely wonderful. So, if you are planning to go for a web hosting service, I strongly recommend dreamhost.com. You can use the couple of Promo code I have created to get maximum possible discounts and offer upto us$97.

 The Promo code 1. MEYSHAN1

The Promo code 2. VINO

The use above two promo codes at dreamhost and get over us$97 discount or to get your free hosting.
